retrieving

Recommended Posts

Right iv got the pup retrieving rabbits to me then putting them down a thew feet infront of me. Im pretty happy with this but would like to try and get her to hold them untill i take em from her. What can i do to get her to hold onto them? At the moment she is straight back to me drops em about 2 feet infront then she will stand there looking for her next run, her recall went to pot in the past thew weeks but last couple of nights iv had her out picking up a couple of rabbits on her own and everything is coming on, Recall is now bang on and she is sitting and staying on comand.

I was advised to try 'send back' training in this situation. If the pup will still retrieve a toy/ dead rabbit, drop it on the ground, get the pup in to heel and walk on a few paces. Then send her back to fetch her rabbit/ toy back to you. Keep increasing the number of paces after doing it a few times. This way, you are also reinforcing the 'leave it' command (when you drop the toy/ rabbit) and the 'heel' (as you walk away) as well as her retrieving.

My saluki x tends to carry back to a few feet away, and then kills her rabbit, drops it, ignores it and walks away. I tried to teach send back when she caught because she is not interested in dummies and the like. She' s over ten now and tbh, I' m just happy when she catches now (not often), so I' ve never had the opportunity to try this technique properly, but I should think you will be in with a better chance of being succesful with a young dog.

I got this advice from Juckler123 on here

She isn't interested in dummies really or even dead game anymore, she knows its dead and isn't interested. She used to play around alot with her catch but now she has calmed down. Iv tryed sending her back for it but instead of going back to the rabbit she looks around and gets excited thinking there is something there for her to run. Iv read up some old threads and iv got a couple of things i want to try so ill give it ago tonight.
