Young dog obedience

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am a new member,

I have a dog Syd who is a scottish deerhound X collieX greyhound, just over a year old.

He is fairly obedient unless he is off the lead and distracted, by almost anything, so I have been experimenting with a remote training collar. I need him to be safe around stock, but we don't often meet any.

He is generally very sociable and freindly, and quickly calms down when alllowed to interact with other dogs, although he is initially over enthusiastic.

I wonder if anyone has any advice about the use of these collars?

I have been following the instructions and the results have been good so far, I have only used it for long distance - off the lead training.

Unless very distracted he reacts very well to just the beep.

Thanks in Advance

Carrie

Not too keen on those collars- try not to become over reliant on it and stick to training without it where you can.

If your dog is taking an interest in livestock, it really is vital that you nip it in the bud, and get him used to being around farm animals and ignoring them. Farmers don' t tend to give second chances on that front, and you will never get any rabbiting permission in your locality if there is the merest hint that you have a dog that once chased a sheep.

There' s a working dog health and training section on here, where you could use the search thingy to look up shock collars.
