philpot 5,184
We have all done this many times over, a process I always enjoy and today was no exception. I wanted to compare my H&N FTT with JSB heavies, JTS Dead Centre and Knockout slugs all through my hw110 .177. A bit bored today waiting in for a delivery so I thought I would find out what shot pentration was like in a piece of 3x2'' timber as a start point. I set up the wood 15mt from my patio table, topped up the air in the gun and proceeded to shoot 3 of each pellet into the wood. the rain suddenly started with gusto so back into the house to look at the results. Using a wire probe, I measured the depth to the back of each pellet to give an idea just how deep the pellets went. I know a length of timber will not be the same density all over but it gives me some indication. 1/ H&N FTT 15 , 23 & 14mm a combined depth of 52mm 2/ JTS Dead Centre 25, 23 & 17mm '' 65mm 3/ JSB Exact Heavy 18, 20 & 20mm '' 58mm 4/ Knockout slugs 17, 25 & 9mm '' 51mm I am not going to dig the pellets out but I will do the same again on plywood which will be a more even density and will also show flattening effect of the pellet which I hope may offer some sort of indication of lead distortion. One thing I noticed was that the slugs seem to twist on impact which makes me wonder if a sub 12 is strong enough to keep the path straight as it hits the target and that could work both for you but possibly against you. Each of the pellets will be tested at 25mt to check how good the groups are before I start testing at longer range. A job for tomorrow if the weather is okay. Phil Quote Link to post
