A blast from the past.

Recommended Posts

I borrowed a Beretta 682 Gold, black action, 30'' sporter to try out. I took it to Cockets Farm ground yesterday to put it through its paces, I had forgotton just how good these guns are, this one has had little use still having a tight action closure/opening and my god did it feel good. I shot it on both english sporting stands and fitasc targets with very pleasing results. I used my usual cartridges, Eley Superbs 7.5 and 1/4 chokes, really good kills even though I would prefer 3/8 chokes but they were not in the bundle although if I buy it, I will be looking to get some 3/8 chokes if possible from Beretta or perhaps an independant manufacturer.
It was a great day, the weather stayed warm and sunny which was not expected and that in itself made the day enjoyable as well as loving shooting this gun of course.

I have never been keen on internal chokes as I like to see whats in there and just give a twist with my fingers to check they are tight and with this in mind, the internal chokes of this 682G are not to my liking.  I looked for an independent manufacturer for some extended chokes but the price was bloody high to say the least then I found on Beretta's Italian site that they made a set for the 682 called Victory which are not available through GMK (UK importer). I had heard some good things about Brieley guns and their chokes so I thought it would be worth checking to see if they had anything to fit my gun........................ bugger me, they sell the Beretta Victory extended chokes and at half the price listed with Beretta, winner winner xmas dinner..

I sent off for a pair of 3/8th also known as Light Modified which arrived a couple of days later in the post and just in time to try them at my local ground last Sunday, it is worth saying that these are not available in the internal choke range so I was pleased to find them. I can only say the breaks were fantastic even my buddy commented on the balls of dust that the clays were turning into. He did suggest perhaps the clays were a different make that were designed to turn to dust upon being hit by the shot but I advised him that he was talking his usual bollocks and that these new chokes combined with my superior marksmanship was the reason for the dust balls....!!!

I popped into my local RFD yesterday and recalled the results of my skill level but my buddy had already been in so they knew the story and made funny remarks regarding the shooting session however my pal at the other side of the counter said he thought they had some Victory chokes tucked away in the upstairs store area and went off to look. He came back with 9 chokes, 2 were the longer ones so no good but the rest were, CYL, 2x SK, 2xIC, MOD, and IM. He checked the price from Brieley and said I could have them for a tenner each, I was not bothered about the CYL choke but took the rest. I gave them a good clean and a very light oil and replaced all my internal chokes for these 8 external chokes thinking that I have done rather well out of this and hope these extra chokes perform as well as the 3/8th chokes I bought.

Roll on my next outing although I may pop round to try them on my trap that I leave on one of my perms tomorrow if it doesn't rain..
