Vizsla coat types and weather

I could have put this question in a number of places as I suppose it relates to different coat types in a number of breeds. However, the reason I've placed it here is because I was recently talking to an East European lady about the vizsla she had with her.

The bitch in question was wire haired, although I didn't realise this at first as it was one of the smoother ones with hardly any furnishing on the face and just a few longer hairs on the back. 

My question is, how does each type (smooth and wire haired) cope in different weathers/seasons? Now I understand that breeds which come in a variety of coats (e.g. German pointer, vizsla etc) do so because the harsher coat is supposed to be beneficial in a harsher climate (and when facing cover?). I guess I'm asking whether, considering the variety of weather within a twelve month period (even more so in a continental country like Hungary or Germany) would a smooth vizsla cope better in the winter than a wire-haired would cope in the summer?
