bigbulls 26
i had never tried any of my ferrets on rats before as iv allways needed rabbits so just didnt really bother. my big bully cross killed my best ferret and i hadnt done much with the other one at all so thought what the heck and gave it a go on rats. i put it to ground in a very ratty hedge and stood back, rats started to bolt everywhere well before i had a chance to swing a stick and i found myself standing there just watching the chaos. now i no i have a ratter that works im going to have a propper go at them and get the terriers out for a bit of sport. might ask a couple of people along as well, i think there should be more sticks swinging about. its the albino thats working the rats Quote Link to post

para1 11
Mate if you value your ferrets DO NOT put your ferrets on rat, If it comes across a female with babies it will get cut to pieces. It MIGHT win the fight but you will have a vet bill DON@T DO IT. Quote Link to post

Guest MOLLY
Ferreting rats is not the big deal people make out. They do occasionally get bitten, nothing too serious. I have yet to see a doe rat protecting her young, they tend to run and desert them. The ferrets who are used to ratting go down sets of their own accord, if it was so bad they would refuse, you cannot make a ferret do anything it does not want to Moll. Quote Link to post
Guest ocs1867
My friend lost a female Ferret to a large male rat. Quote Link to post
bigbulls 26
tis a shame lovely ferret that looks good i think ratting is fine mate mine have been bitten and i just put salt water on the wounds and none have died or even got ill plus it is fun using a ferret that was pretty much how i saw it bud, iv had ferrets for years, as most of us have, and many years ago when i was a lad and full of all the good ideas that only young lads are, i would trap rats and drop them in a barrel with one of my ferrets. you get a fair idea of what goes on and see that your ferret can get and take a bit of stick in the chaotic process, i would clean any wounds up and business as usual. i suppose its a scaled down version of running the bullys on foxs (pre ban), if you dont want your dog to get a few scuffs round its boat-race then you dont run foxs, but when they did get a face full they were cleaned up , let to rest and keen to go again when it was time. para1 11
All I can say is in my opinion it is bad practice to use Ferrets on rats, using the same ferrets on rabbets will make them harder to pick up and they normally kill more often. Yes Molly they only get a little bite now and then, how would you feel if that one bite took snowies eye out ( it's happened to me ).It doesn't take many rating trips for your ferret to refuse to enter to rat. I know because I did all that stuff when I was young, there was no one to tell me any different. Yes it is good fun but Rats will F**k up a good ferret. Quote Link to post
