Andrea 2
There’s a similar story going around in this country. New owners are paying more for ‘rare ‘silver coloured Labs. They refused to listen to the fact that silver labs are actually chocolate or black labs with a faulty pigment gene. They are actually paying more for these ‘new’ coloured dogs. madness
BlueCoyote 0
i agree its stupid to pay extra for a colour, or think its better because of its colour.. i just hate to see working breeds swept up into this crap. i dont give a rat's ass if my dog is pink, purple or polka dotted.... can it get the job done? merle colours scare me anyway. so much can go wrong by breeding them, i'm surprised theyre so popular. Guest SJM
They will have been crossbred with another breed which carries merle at some point in the past thats where the merle colour comes from. This is a common thing in America, merle is being introduced into breeds such as pomeranians, chihuahuas, cocker spaniels, poodles etc and then the breeders try and say its some rare pigment thing, phantom gene thats been lurking etc etc etc etc when the reality is you cannot possibly get a merle from a breed which doesnt naturally carry the gene, unless you crossbreed with a breed which does. End of story. The people who breed these dogs tend to be a bit dense when it comes to basic genetics so they tend to repeat the lie over and over until they beleive it themselves
Guest SJM
merle colours scare me anyway. so much can go wrong by breeding them, i'm surprised theyre so popular. Things only go wrong if you break the merle "rules" and breed merle to merle producing defective puppies, or if you breed merles to a colour which masks the merle gene ie sable. What happens when you breed a merle x sable is that the sable masks the merle pattern in some pups and allthough they may show the dappled pattern at birth or shortly afterwards if your really looking closely for it, as the pup ages, the pattern quickly dissappears and you are left with what essentially looks like a sable, but unless the breeder informs the new owner it is genetically a merle, and that dog is then bred with a merle unwittingly, it can produce defects in the pups. There is now a genetic test for merle so that dogs which may be hiding the pattern, often known as phantom or pseudo merles, can be tested to determine their true genetic colour before mating. Brindle can also hide the pattern very well, its a kind of unwritten rule in breeds where brindle and merle occur, not to mix "spots" with "stripes" If you stick to these basic guidelines theres no reason why merles should be any better or worse than any other colour of dog

BlueCoyote 0
you're right i dont get the joke nothing new there! care to share the fun though? i hate being in the dark!!! also about merle breeding. that i understand but only recently became aware of it.. and i pride myself in my canine knowledge!! but i'm not a breeder on a professional level. and neither are most "breeders" come to think of it. all the ones i know, with the exception of maybe three or four, have no earthly idea about genetics. and we all know the proper name for breeders who get into it for money and not for the dogs..
