Problem with my ferret

Recommended Posts

hello all , i was just a little curious i have had my ferret for several months now , but he always seems very shy of everyone and as soon as there is any sound or motion he runs and hides , i dont have any idea of his past life as i caught him in a animal trap , hes fed on a full meat diet and the ocassional raw egg , he has a large house with a outdoor run , do you think if i got him a female would it help him at all ?

Iggy ~ nice to meet and chat with ye earlier, by the way ;) ~ I think the basic problem is that he was taken from the wild, mate. He's Feral, by name and nature. Personaly, considering he was likely born of feral parents, I think ye've done amazingly well to be able to do as much as ye can with him.

Ye problem now, of course, is finding him a jill. And, if ye manage to catch a feral one? Who knows what their kits may turn out like? Domestic bred jill would almost certainly mellow the offspring. But, as we discussed; Getting one to ye???

I can't help thinking; Someone got those original ferrets up there. There must be boats. I guess, like them, ye'll just have to come down to the mainland and get one. As I said earlier, end of spring and there'll be a bonannza of kits available. Ye have till then to figure the logistics out and find someone in Scotland ready to play ball.

But that's the solution: Breed out the feral blood or else just fetch in some domestic stock. God alone knows what good he'd be as a worker.

hello again DS. yeh well im questioning if hes a actually maybe a household one escaped as he seems very good biting wise , i just had him out of the cage now and he was licking ferretvite off my fingers but as soon as i put him on the floor hes off at an alarming rate but whens hes in your arms hes extremely docile. do you think it could be possible he might have an illness of some sort ? im never had him at the vet yet i was planning on taking him somtime after i got himbut i never got around too it . but i thout it was the norm for a male ferret of this age , well i thought he was a older ferret judgeing the size of him fully stretched out he nearly reaches 26 inches and is just under 2.5kg , but when looking at his teeth they seem to be bright white and no yellow tinge like with some of the older ferrets , im not sure if that true about the teeth i just read about it!!

well im in the process of getting another jill i have 4 traps set around the mainland so i hope to have something by the end of the week but wil see what happens in the future , not sure what he will be like as a worker , im a little worried to try incase i lose him , but i rememebr when i got him in the trap first he was absolutley stinkin which could show hes been out for a while or he is a feral ferret but i got him all cleaned up so the smell is resonable but my mother doesnt think too much of the smell haha

As above, Igs. Get him a domestic jill, if humanly possible. Adding 'wild' blood to the mix would be a backward step.

When ye say ye have traps set on the Mainland, I take it ye mean the big island? Bloody hell! And I thought I was isolated! :icon_eek:

So, what are the chances of ye reaching Scotland?

haha yeh the big island , i live in one of the smaller islands its takes a 20 min ferry journey to get to the mainland so im off every nite to check the traps but its a fun it interest me when every one else thinks im off my head haha , well im in aberdeen now and again its takes eaither 12 hour boat trip from shetland to aberdeen or a hour by the plane but its bludy expensive to get off the island by plane , then theres the problem of finding someone whos selling ferrets everyone seems to want to this home check thing as we spoke about last nite which makes it even more awkward to go home with a new ferret , i do have a friend that has ferret male bred with a wild polecat female but the only offspring he has left are all males and i was kind of wantin a female

well do males and femals ever fight with each other or is that more off a thing between 2 males ?? how do the females smell? i know my male has a bit of a pong with it but im pretty used with it now

Jills have no way a bad a smell as hobs they will have a quick squabble then thats that just remember the jill will come in to season so all her back end will swell as soon as you notice a change take her out and seperate them or you will have kits evrywhere.

yeh well i was planning on breeding as alot of people seem to want them here and they are hard to come by i would think that i would keep 2 to myself thou and invest in a bigger house a shed or somthing , but if i decide not to breed i will have to take the jill out of season with a a vasectomised hob? or this jill jab do u know if u can administer the jab yourself and is it true there is a tablet form of the jill jab?

Ok, Igs. Females don't smell anything like males. So, if the spicey aroma of the Hob doesn't bother ye, the warm, gentle scent of a Jill won't really notice.

Hobs and Jills don't normally fight. Though the male appears very rough when he mates. Jills like it rough ;)

Forget about home checks as ye forget about 'Rescues'. We just need to find ye someone who breeds workers and is around Aberdeen now. No heated rush as nothing much will be available for some months yet anyway. But it'll be well worth the wait :good:
