HEY IM JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE CAN HELP MY PUP IS 6 AND A HALF MONTH HES GREAT OF THE LEAD WITH OTHER DOGS BUT WHEN HES ON THE LEAD HE THINKS HES MIKE TYSON HAS ANYONE GOT ANY IDEA HOW TO STOP THIS .......... THANKS J.R

A good way that i was once shown...........and it can work.............is to have someone standing up the road with another dog and walk you dog up to it as if it was going out for a walk.

The instant it starts having ago.........about turn and take the dog straight back in the house and leave it. After a while it should begin to realise that if it plays up its walk will be halted.

It works well if you are on the way to some enjoyful excersise with the pup.

Like all things you need to persevere with it but i have seen it work. good luck.

Rolfey.

i had this problem with my terrier.

i fixed this by very hard and sharp golts on the lead. but at the same time ignoring him. and calmly walking on.

some lurcher don't like being told off so just ignoring him and keep on walking might help. most lurcher only do things for attention. for example when they jump up and you say bad dog, push him down. to some lurchers they seem to think, "o well, i still got his attention." with mine i found to just turn around and walk off then call her and stroke her before she jumped up, worked a treat.

this is just an idea that worked for me. i think the ignoring them is most important tho.

first things first if like me you are not as experienced in lurchers as some, then buy a book. i got the lurcher by jack sheardown and it gives me a base to follow and try my own ideas as things happen with my two.

as for on the lead, find a quiet place that you know of and walk like you would normally when your dog pulls than 1 short sharp pull back to the possition you want the dog to walk in and the word heel.

when the dog is by your side start to walk again,it will probally start pulling so do the same again.this time when the dog is back by your side make a fuss of them.

reduce the length of the leed to have them walking with you and walk for 15ft praise the dog and then walk again normally.

when the dog pulls again repete the process again

you must be consistant with the word heel.the dog will get what it means and soon it will respond to just the word, this is when i stop pulling back and just say heel.remember to keep up the praise and it will come right.

i got my beddi/whippet right on the leed and then walked her around town. i went to slightly more busy places each trip out till now where i have walked her through norwich. now i have a bomb proof dog on the lead.

Yours sounds much like a first cross collie greyhound that I had. I reckon that being such a highly strung and energetic dog, he was playing out his frustration at not being able to play with other dogs when on the lead. Does yours wail and yip if he sees another dog coming when he is on the lead, or does he stay quiet and just lunge at them when he gets the chance?
