Public perception and social media

I've noticed significant concern among users of a well known video hosting service with respect to the future of their channels and subsequent income streams. From what I understand this well know video hosting service is responding to backlash from the majority of users sickened or fed up by the amount of hunting and gun-related content being uploaded and made available.

Some of these users have millions of subscribers and multiple-million views of their videos. I'm sure they are earning a nice wad of cash as well.

I'm not certain if the well known video hosting service is just enforcing the laid down standards, responding to a change in community standards, or just having a knee-jerk reaction to some terrible press at the moment. Whichever reason, or combination of reasons, it seems to me there is a real risk of us losing easy access to the videos we love.

I know there are other hosts for the videos, but without the easy income stream most of the big names we probably all follow will close down that side of their business, It just makes sense.

What galls me is that the well known video hosting service allows absolute c%^p to be uploaded without so much as a whimper or even thinly veiled threat. I mean, how many videos of some 16 year old kid applying make-up can you watch???? I sound like an old man don't I?

Anyway, the point of this post is to ask the question - If what we love to watch is under threat because of a knee-jerk reaction to a shift in community standards, is it in our interests to point out that the offended parties can always choose not to watch? Are we too fragmented in our interests (and self interests) to mount a proper defence of our hobby? Its always easier to gather the antis than it is to gather the faithful so would any effort be doomed?

For mine, I'm going to resist every manoeuvre by the anti crowd by supporting the big bodies that defend our interests. I realise that there is friction even between those groups, so I'm going to support them all and hope that some of the messages stick.
