Boo! Hunting newb...

Hello there! My names ken, I'm 23, from Telford - Shropshire and well.... not a complete newb like the title claims but for all intents and purposes I would say I am..

I have experienced hunting while spending a short period of time living in mid Wales. Most of what I did was hunt pheasant and rabbit on the land of a local farmer.. Well... When I say local... The farm house was 30 yards away. I lived in the seven valley near Abermule in an old farm house.

Of what I caught I ate. My first taste of rabbit and despite it being classed as a rodent I was pleasantly surprised at its taste... Not so of my first field cleaning experience.... Especially since all I had in the way of experience was a list of instructions and ended up botching the job...

.... .... And... ... .. Much to my embarrassment... At the time (I didn't do biology in school...) I saw white blotches on the liver and thought "Uh... Heh... Must be normal... Oh well" and carried on... Well... I'm still alive so.... I'm taking a safe bet and going with the idea that it was tape worm...

Having said that... Thats one of the reasons I came looking at this forum... I have a billion questions... One of which is - Do British rabbits suffer from Tularemia? (Is that the right spelling?) Ive come to be weary while handling rabbit during cleaning them after reading up that and I have to admit it kind of put me off hunting rabbits for few years..

But.... 3 years ago I think it was... Maybe 4, I moved back in with my parents in Telford and I'm starting to miss being outside. Freezing cold and lurking around looking for some food...

The actual reason I tried hunting in the first place was for food rather fun... When I was in Wales... Near Newtown (As I said earlier... Near Abermule... Its in between Welshpool and Newtown. The cottage I lived in was up in the hills... Just below Dolforwyn castle to be specific) I was living with my father (My parents split and divorced just after I was born... So I initially only knew my old man as the guy that came around once every 2 weeks and gave me 50p... Wow... I thought I was rich.. I could buy 3 packs of crisps with that)

Well.. My dad and his wife.... they went off on holiday one week end and brought me food for that week end... But alas.... They went out on the Friday... Sunday morning they called and said "Were staying until next Sunday! Your a big boy... You can fend for your self" Well... It had just been payday... And I had the week off work too... BUT.... I had just brought a PS2, a tv to play it on and lots of games to play so I was broke.... FOOD!

Well... I had a rifle... Just a .22... Well.. I knew I was good... Before I had a job over there I spend most of my time shooting cans... Further and further away all the time... I was able to shoot a pepsi can about 200 yards away unless it was windy! It was fun..... Get some one to shake the can then hide behind a barrier in case I missed..... It would kind of spin like the cartwheel fire work does at the November Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night celebrations. Of course.... Nothing much grew on that spot after that... Hmmm No wonder with all the rubbish they put in that drink..... Any way... Back to food... And a lack of...

OMG.... 18 years old and I had to work for my food!!!! Who ever heard of that.. No way no how... Shesh...

The belief's of staying in bed until noon at a week end... Staying up til 2 am and upping a certain finger to the law as often as possible went down the shoot. I had no money.. Enough food for Sunday nights meal.. Well... I could have eaten beans on toast 3 times a day every day... There was 300 cans of Neto's baked beans but I wouldn't even use them for... Well.... I wouldn't usethem... So... I decided Id try my luck with a moving target... I walked down the road to our neighbour and asked if he minded me shooting a rabbit or pheasant or two for food... I was broke, had none and well... Didn't want to go begging... He said yes and once I got past the guilt of killing a living creature and the first 30-40 animals I scared away, I actually managed to take down a pheasant..

Yey.... I had food! Well..... Only I had no idea how to pluck it... God what a mess that was! I think I tore more than I plucked... At the time I had no access to the internet... Too far away from the interchange for reliable ADSL and I couldn't be bothered with a teeny 56k modem..... (I have a 20mb connection now) so I couldn't really look it up on the net!... So... Used my brain and got depressed at how bad I did....

Well.... In the end I got there... It was big enough to do me the week but I was already hooked and went back for a rabbit.... I ended up taking the bus into town and getting books on hunting, skinning treating etc..... and had fun that week...

Now I want to get back into it but I want to do it properly this time and thus looking for help...

If you have read this far then I hope you have had a giggle at my plunders... If not then shame on you!

G'night for now though.... 2:05 am...... Ok ok.... Old habit's.... uh..... Don't die!
