stork 1
I got a puppy and sinse this our old dog has lost a hell of a lot of weight and i think it is because of him not getting on with the puppy all the time i have to keep them seperate has any one else seen this or experiansed this for them selves if so let me knoe and what can i do ..............i `m in the process of worming him..Thanks STORK. with old dogs mate it realy do pay to give them the most basic off foods. a ce'real based diet would, with a low protine content give the dog all he needs. to mutch meat based protine would have the opposite effect on the dog and you will see the weight fall off him. thier body cant cope with high protien, so they may shit it out like water, or spew it up. mind you i aint no vet,but i would think its common sence Hes on dry food all the time he cant handle any thing else but he is now looking a little better . oh good, but try him on a dry food with a protine level of about 12% and within a few weeks you may see a change. mind you some say that dried foods help damage the liver and kidneys in dogs,so a long feeding program, with a high protine diet may be responsable for the early deaths in some dogs fed only on prosessed feeds We rehomed him off a well known rescue plase and his previous owners (gypsy`s) beat him silly burnt him with fag`s and so on the food his on is 12% so i mix a bit of cooked meat in some day`s but i think he will recover when the pup can start to go out and defend him sels not long now. skycat 6,174
If the dog is old then you need to feed him the best possible quality protein. A 12% protein food is far too low in protein, probably more cereal than meat in it and the chances are it's not got a lot of fat/oil in it either. If you value the dog get him either on to fresh meat: beef and lamb mince would be good, not too much offal (tripe) and the occasional bit of liver. Add a bit of SA37 (vitamin and mineral supplement). My old dog loves tinned rice pudding too! At nearly 13 years old she needs food that is high in quality and easy to digest. She gets 2 meals a day now, instead of the usual one I feed my other adult dogs. Scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast or a tin of sardines in oil and a bit of cooked whole rice. Supper is either raw minced rabbit ( she often won't eat raw food now) or cooked mince with a complete dog food: Purina One. I don't mind spoiling her one bit now as I reckon any dog over 12 is on borrowed time and I owe it to her to make her last years as good as possible.

In that case get him on to Purina Proplan for old dogs (senior) and mix in left overs etc into it to make it more interesting. IMO this is the best complete food there is.
