Making A Buffalo Horn Stick

Recommended Posts

Following a link in another thread I came across this set of videos. There are seven in the series and well worth a watch. I used clip converter to download them to my pc now I can watch them when I like.

Parts 4 5 and 6 are how to make a buffalo horn crook. I think they are about the best stick making videos I have ever seen.

First one part 4

Second one part 5

If you take your time heating the buffalo horn, with the hot airgun, it will become like toffee. Keep the gun about 4 to 6inches from the horn so you don't burn it, and keep the gun moving, on the two sides and the inner side, i never heated the back, and i also used to put a file between the sash-clamp and back of the horn so it got a better grip. I used to take about i hour 15 minutes for the first bend.

I have some photos i will try and put up.

Its best if you don't try to boil buffalo horn, as it can delaminate.

The photos of the sash-clamp have not copied good enough, but this stick was done just with the clamp. I later got this frame for pulling the nose out, it has holes in the plate so that a bolt can be put where you want it.

I have some spare hand-piece items, i will put in the post, if you pm me your address.
