Guest eirnhunter
need a little advice on a lucher dog.hes almost 3 years old,hes a grayxwippet, great ferreting dog, good on the lamp, retreves well to hand mostly alive, and gives his best on every slip.the problem, fox.he never showed much interest in them, often pulling up on them out lamping, coursing them but not wanting to catch them.last season he saw a few while out digging and got right into them in the daytime.like he was killing them all his life.last nite i went out for the first time since the summer lamping.he is fit but not at his best, but it was only a walk, just a warm up.first field, big open stubble ,and in the middle a fox.a couple of squeeks and the fox was coming in like a rocket,u know the feeling a fox never lamped before and a run for the dog for sure.at 15,feet or so it hit the lite and off went the dog like a bullet.on the first strick the dog missed the fox and flipped himself let a bit of a yelp but got up and got back to the fox before it got to the ditch ,i watched as he grabed it and pulled it down, thinking great he has it ,hes doing them on the lamp.but just as i said it i heard a yelp and watched as the fox made another run for the ditch and get away, with the dog still cheaseing him.when i got him back to me there was a nasty hole in the side of his snoot.i gave him a bit if praise and moved on.i am now affaired he might never do them.has any one ever had this problem, and what do i do next?any tips! Quote Link to post
salclalin 240
If he's doing them in the day he'll soon do them on the lamp Quote Link to post
lucky 578
the fox might have just been locked onto the dog (if you know what i mean) and when the fox has let go it's been to quick for the dog and set off again ? try him again and if its the same next time the best thing you can do is get another dog for foxes mate,it sounds to me like he has'nt got the heart for foxes and does'nt like getting bit. you can go on forever giving dogs another chance, but with me they get no second chances without a very good reason Quote Link to post
Chainman 8
i have had two real game whip/greyhounds in the past one i bought of a lad cos i felt sorry for it it was thin cos all they had done was run hares with him and not feed him the good tucker anyway took him out couple of weeks later down south lampin on mates permission and her got stuck in to everything we slipped him on showin one of my mates bullys up forgameness he was put on foxes and deer and stuff  but he stuck to them like a good un so i think just take your time let him heal proper and build his confidence up again maybe slip him with another dog who is slaughterin foxes hope he comes round for you mate best of luck Quote Link to post

macker 5
have had dogs over the years that would murder a fox by day. and you would think they would do the same at night, but just sit in behind it and nip at the tail, reminds me of terriers great over ground but in a dark place just wont do it. would not be too upset as some times when one gets away he might make sure next time he doesnt. my best lamp and hare dog did the same.just good at tumbling them. if the dog is doing everything else you want and well. you will just have to live with it. best of luck i think a few of us might have had problems like this before.
