Pups First Pig

Recommended Posts

I have two female wolf hound/deer hound/mastiff pups. 1 is considerably harder than the other. (Harder meaning mentally tougher and willing to engage a good size pig and the determination to hold the hog no matter what the hog dishes out.) The 1 pup has been catching pigs with my stag and on her own now for a month. This past week I took the other pup out for a hunt to see how she would do. Under the cover of darkness with the aid of night vision, I eased up to within 100 yards of a group of pigs feeding in a wheat field. As I unclipped both dogs I shinned the group of pigs with my flashlight and give the command to sickem. The stag as always was off like a rocket with the pup hot on his heals. The stag got lined out on a nice sized sow which really put up a good race. As the stag caught, the pup was right there with him. I ran to the catch and was now watching with my head lamp. The pup let go a couple times when the sow would stand still but would latch back on soon after. The sow put up a good fight and the pup didn't let go while the pig was fighting hard. Only when the sow would relax a little did the pup let go and step back for a second. Over all I was very pleased with her first hunt.

well done mate, she done well that night by the sound of it. what the pace (speed) like with these pig dogs as it got bit of wolf/deerhound in it. just reading on the Oz site a bloke just lost a young pig dog (danexgreyx stagx grey) another I would have thought had pace to it. how's your stag bred that's in it .?

Great feeling when a dog gets stuck in on their first pig! My pitty bitch just got on her first pig and she latched on to the snout of a good sow and didn't let go til I called her off. Would've preferred an ear but I ran her with my mate's dog who hit it first and I think in the excitement she just latched onto the first part she could get a hold of

Bird, I don't really know how fast my dogs are. The pups aren't as fast yet as they will be later on as they still have a lot of maturing to do physically. The stag I'm guessing will do 30 mph give or take.

I don't know what bloodline my stag is. The guy I got him from wanted rid of all his hunting dogs because he lost the land he hunted. Something was unwittingly said about the stag which prompted me to offer a little cash for the dog. The guy took the cash and I took a chance on the dog. Not much in between was said. Wouldn't have believed it anyway haha.

Yes it is very exiting when your catch dog catches a good pig for the first time. What was most exciting for me is when my other pup started running down and catching her own pigs instead of running behind my stag. Kinda scares me though because she is to young to be catching big boars by herself.

where lamping pigs means just that  .....[/quote

Yes indeed, sight work and lamping is tons of fun!

The pups are bred to be finder holder type dogs but untill they are mature enough to handle the biggest of boars by themselves, I'll be strictly using them on pigs I can see in order to try and prevent them from swinging from a big boar before they are ready.

Yeah I can't wait for her to start to find on her own. In Australia we expect every dog to find and run down their own pigs

How old are your dogs when you start turning them out on average size pigs? I started mine at 8 to 9 months. This last pup needed a little longer and she was 10 months old when I let her run in and catch with another dog.

I'm about the same, this one took a bit longer as she was a bit silly in the head until she was 11 months. In terms of catching their own pigs, I expect them from the first time they get stuck in there to hunt out with the older dogs and learn off them. Then it's just a numbers game until it clicks
