I've watched them go in there before to steal hen's eggs, bring them outside the shed, break them, take a couple of mouthfuls and fly off... while teaching their young 'uns how to do it. Not this time... I trotted into our utility room/mudroom and grabbed the 22LR, due to the swirling, blustery breeze which would have pushed a pellet off course. Took the shot from the small mudroom window, estimating it at around 52-55 yards (lasered afterwards at 48 yards). Gave it one mildot of holdunder, since the rifle is zeroed at 18 yards/65 yards. Aimed between the shoulderblades, since the maggie was facing away from me, which allowed a little leeway up and down in terms of holdunder. Coypu Hunter 486 Posted April 19, 2015 Author Report Share Posted April 19, 2015 Cheers! It's actually a Zastava 22LR, which (confusingly) they designate the CZ99 Precision. Made in Serbia, where they know a thing or two about guns, apparently... It has a 22" cold hammer forged barrel, and can print 20mm groups with the right subsonic ammo at its 65 yard zero, now that I've floated the barrel. It's my go-to gun because it's so darn reliable, especially if there's a breeze that would make a shot with an air rifle too unpredictable. Interestingly, I couldn't find either an entrance or exit hole on the magpie, no blood either, just three or four small black feathers on the ground. It either died of fright, or the round whizzed straight through the engine room without touching the spine or breastbone, which would have made more of a mess. 1 Quote Link to post

A .22 lr bullet is just a bit more stable than a tiny airgun pellet when it's windy outside. That's why I'm a big fan of .25 cal air rifles, just a bit more forgiving in windy conditions. ratbuster 808 Posted April 19, 2015 Report Share Posted April 19, 2015 I do have a French catalog ( http://www.ediloisir.com ) from the late 90's which had a couple .25 airrifles in it (Most BSA's) Suddenly they were gone. Maybe something to do with changing legislation ? They still had .25 ammo on offer until last year. Because it's much easier to buy a .22 Lr in France, there's no real need to opt for a .25. In Holland it's the other way round; rather restricted to buy and use a .22 lr, a .25 air rifle can be had without any licence or restriction on its power output Quote Link to post
