J_Edwards 70
I was in a similar position, but my police force doesn't like issuing .17HMR for foxes, so I went for .223 and .17HMR. However, I've been shooting with other people who use HMR on foxes, and I've never seen any off them get up. At sensible ranges of course, under 100 yards and with a head or chest shot. Because of this, they do tend to issue centerfire on first attempt, but that's just my force, yours may insist on conditions or that you go the rimfire route first. I have the CZ452 style in .17HMR, and I love it to bits. It feels excellent quality for the money you pay for it. I'd recommend a trigger improvement kit though, as the trigger is very heavy. riflehunter583 58
I think some get way too touchy about this question. when I was asking the same question I wished someone would have just spelt it out like this: save looking stupid in front of the firearms officer do your research what the local police allow for fox beforehand. after which keep in your mind that .22lr will kill foxes up to 50/60 yards ok. .17hmr up to 100/120 ok .223 up to say 200-300 yards fine. the question then becomes, what ranges will you be meeting Charlie (small fields/woodland/back gardens or large fields) well placed heart or head shots recommended on all occasions.
