Best Starter Rod

Recommended Posts

As for starter kits I would go with a airflow starter kit 9ft 7 wieght. You get everything for around £60.

Can't believe how far gear has come on I picked a one up the other day and put a couple lines out and it was as good as my setup.

This sounds spot on - don't spend a fortune - you will soon figure out what kind of action you like in a rod, what lines your prefer etc. Then you get into the presentation side of things and that really is the business end and will dictate your catch success - so once you have the arm waiving bit sorted it gets even more interesting ;)

I have a small fortune sitting in my kit shed - some of the most expensive reels and rods barely get out, some of the cheapest are my favourites and just seem to "fit" .

Once you establish the right rod, reel and line and you can catch fish you start to spend some real time and effort in tying flies. Then you are completing the circle so to speak.

Most of my preparation now is spent on tying patterns that are not in books but that I know will catch the fish I am after on the waters I am on. And therein lies great satisfaction.

If you get yourself sorted out give me a shout and I will do you some patterns that should get you catching pretty quick. If you want to buy flies stick to buying the hand crafted ones from John Norris or mail order from fulling mill. Most other flies will fall apart after a decent fish. Better still tie your own

The only down side if you can call it that is that once you get the bug of fly fishing you will come to see that it really is the ONLY way to fish. :whistling:
