How old is your pup now? I'm thinking he's still a puppy really: a lot of youngsters mess about with their first catches> keep on with the retrieving training: use a rabbit skin dummy wrapped round an old weighted stuffed sock: something to mimic the weight and feel of a rabbit. Don't over do the training though as they get bored very quickly, especially at this age. One, maybe two retrieves per session.

Try hiding the dummy and sending him to look for it to make things more interesting.

Also, don't take the dummy straight from him when he brings it in, the same goes for what he's caught or what you've shot. Let him hold it without trying to take it from him. Hold on to the other end of whatever he's carrying and praise him: its HIS prize so don't get into a battle of wills over whose thing it is or he'll be reluctant to give it up to you or even come to you.

sooner or later he'll let go of it and you can then put it in a bag. Patience and more patience is the key! If he's really lost the plot then stop taking him out for a few weeks on live game and get him retrieving hidden things for you at home or in an area where there's no game to distract him.

If he's got to the teenage stage where he's pushing the limits and trying to run the show its even more important that you don't sour him or get him into bad habits. Just keep on with the training and make sure you have fun together when training: that's the most important thing.

I have problems with my pup doing the same thing..................if you are running it with another dog its likely to be a possession related problem................from recallection your pup is still quite young as is mine.......

Use a dummy witha rabbot pelt on it attached to a retractable lead to re-inforce the retreiving...........

It could just be excitement...........if the dog has been retrieving then its in the grey matter some where!!..just needs reinforcing....legging it with its catch is something you need to jump on, as it takes some shifting.

My pup never retrieved....so is slightly different....the distances she fecks off ar becoming shorter and shorter so progress is being made......

cheers all

he is 9mth old but as i have said very mature for his age.

i think being with another dog dont help but am taking him to some good spots soon on himself.

i do training in the garden he retrieves dummies with skins and even whole rabbits to me all the time and finding stuff in the garden its just transfering it to the field, so im going to take him out to some fields with the next rabbit we catch and do some retrieving, personnally i think he will grow out of it but every little helps.

My dog is 12 months and retrieves 85% of the time. When shes not been at them for a while they seem better. If shes out with dogs she trusts shes sound but other dogs that might try and get in on the action or shes not use to she will arse around. Also seems when theres even people she does not trust there then she arses around too. Just got another pup 8 weeks and it doesn't seem to be a "natural retriever" good job shes not going to be a rabbiting dog :whistling:

Hope ye get a good result just keep at it.
