243 Cleaning

Recommended Posts

Hi Lads,

I got myself my first centrefire a 243 a few months back, I am just wondering how often I should clean the barrel ? And what would be the best stuff to use, any step by step videos or anything would be great,I just dont want to damage the barrel in anyway by not cleaning it or cleaning it wrong.

Hi - I also have a .243

I clean mine every time I use it, I use Parker Hale 009 for the barrel, soak it by pushing through a wetted patch and leaving it for half an hour or so. Then I push another wet and then a couple of dry patches through until comes out crud free and dry. Do try not to get any cleaner or oil in the action or in the throat by using a rod guide. I use Philips Gun oil (spray can) on a cloth and apply to metal parts (not bolt or action which I give a wipe down with a crud free rag).

When you do this over a few zero'ing trips, and you use the same set-up and ammo, you should make a note of where your first three bullets hit in relation to where you aim, (especially the first one) as it's vital you are aware of your point of impact, because it is your duty to do your utmost to ensure a swift despatch of the beast.

good luck

If its fitted with a moderator,id take that off after every firing, regardless of caliber or shots put through.

Id invest in a decent cleaning rod,jag and some solvents, and a bore guide.

Some people don't clean their rifles hardly ever, some after every shot,I've personally found no difference at all in where the shot goes from a clean to a dirty rifle.

I'll clean after 10 shots or so,or after I've been out and had some bad weather.

Mike Noriss has some excellent videos on cleaning.
