A Morning Out With My Baikal O/u

Recommended Posts

So, until recently I've always been a rifle man, first air, and more recently my first .22lr.

I've had a couple of goes with a shotgun at clay grounds, but never taken one out into the field for some 'proper' sport.

Truth be told I wasn't even going to apply for my SGC, but at £50 for the FAC or £60 for both, I decided to push the boat out. Shortly afterwards, I saw an old Baikal 27 (which I've used before and knew I got on with) in good nick up for sale for silly money, and got it bought.

Since then it has been out with me a few times on pigeons and hares and I've started to enjoy the shotgun a lot more.

I've fancied introducing my two mutts to shooting for a while now, and with the grass getting longer, and mr bunny concealing himself oh so much better I decided it would be this morning, so I loaded them up and off we went, me with a pocket full of 7.5's and the dogs looking throughly confused as to why they'd been woken up so early in the morning.

Now neither of my dogs have had any training, hunting wise, so I was skeptical as to how successful this trip would be. But both have good noses and love to flush, and both will willingly come off a chase when told to.

As it turned out, we had a brilliant morning, nowhere near the bags that I'm bringing home with the cz, but as far as enjoyment of the sport goes, for me there's no comparison! In the hour we were out the mutts flushed a grand total of 4 bunnies and I managed to bag 3 of those 4 (I didn't shoot at the fourth because the little bitch wouldn't come off it).

So like I say, not huge bags, but the dogs loved it and so did I, proper good fun, and they earned themselves a rabbit breakfast.
