Hi all im new to patterdale terriers. Ive only had him (fig) for one mounth now, but god what a brilliant dog. quite a bit bigger than he is in the picture about three mounths. any advice on toilet trainning would be great. or any other advice for that matter?

Start "Crate Training" you pup immediately if you haven't already. i.e. If your not playing with him or letting him run around outside put him in his crate. The crate is his den. I would feed him in it as well to make it seem like a good place to be. Make sure the crate isn't to BIG. He should have room to turn around and get comfortable but not enough room to go to the bathroom and not be in it. They have natural denning instincts and don't want to be in or around their crap. If it is the correct size he will have to lay in his crap if he craps or pisses his crate.

 

Keep his feeding to a tight schedule. In the morning when you wake up give the lad a drink and let him out. Feed him when he gets back in and let him wait in his crate for about 20 mins. Take him out give another drink and take outside to a specific spot. Always take him to the same spot. This will develope a good habit and you won't have to look out for land mines all of the time. Also always put him out 20mins after eating or drinkingor playing as it gets things moving. Feed it at the same times every day.

 

Let him sleep in you room if possible in his crate by the bed so if he starts whining in the middle of the night you can let him out. I know some people who hang a bell on the door and hit it with the dogs nose before he goes out. This will train him to ring the bell when he wants out. Just don't give him the opportunity to go in the house. Keep a close eye on him. The Monks of New Skete have written a couple of great books on dog training. I would highly recommend them.

 

Keep on him and he'll soon be a reliable companion. Good luck.
