stevoman 4
hi folks, need some advice. i have a kit a got in this summer. she's coming to size now and i was wondering whats the best way to get them working happily. i am going to start putting the collar on her for a day or two to let her get used to it, but what way should i approach getting her to start bolting rabbits. thanks, stephen Quote Link to post
ferretman 0
take a older ferret with you and let the youngster follow it to ground she will soon cotton on. its there instinct to hunt. good luck. Quote Link to post
stevoman 4
i have only one locater collar, are the chances of losing the little one great, or will she tag along with the older ferret? Quote Link to post
stubby 175
ive taken a youngster and older jill out couple weeks back, have 2 collars but thoughtout the day, both jills slipped their collars and still came back out without the need to dig, i wouldent recomend ferreting without collars, but have done it myself on a couple of occassions, both jills down and putting a big hob without collar down to bolt the rabbits Quote Link to post
stevoman 4
i got caught fairly rotten that way lost 2 weeks ago. put my buck down with no collar on his first day out just on a kind of trial run. waited a few hours and came back the next few days but never found him. i learnt my lesson the hard way Quote Link to post
gibby 0
I would just try her out on her own first, on a few small warrens to see if she gets the hang of it. Most of the ferrets Ive owned havent took any real persuasion to go down there first rabbit hole. I almost always work them on there own first of all then put an experienced ferret in after them to bolt any that they missed. But try to do as small a warren as possible to start with i.e. 6-8 holes or less. Quote Link to post
daz1976 8
got 2 jills at 16 weeks old had them down a few small warrens both starting to work well now just wanted to play for first five mins or so but put them down sepratly and their fine Quote Link to post

matt241075 12
hi like gibby said try small sets on her own will pick it up after a few outings but i would put the collar on,we all have tried without and ended up digging, waiting then back the next day to get back the ferret if lucky. no rabbits and your ferret back is better than no rabbits and no ferret. good luck matt Quote Link to post
