Irish Lurcher 1,013
I am in the process of buying a whippet, (I hope). Lad breeds them down south and I plan to visit him next week to have a look and maybe book a pup. I have never had a whippet, so really don’t know what to expect from he/she. Can I expect him/her to be obedient if trained properly? Can he/she live outdoors in pen, reason I ask this question is because a lad told me that they are whores for barking. Thanks in advance for your help. John Quote Link to post
cymruguy69 5
Iv'e got a whippet X and she's great in the kennel. never had a noise out of her. My mate has a got a pure whippet and she's great to. Shouldnt be a problem if the pup is placed in the kennel from a early age. Same as all lurchers. Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Alright John. I got my wee whippet off the same fella your getting yours from i would think? He breeds some top stuff. I have had mine for a while now, sound as a pound for not barking ect, but she is with my lurcher. I have a heat lamp for very cold nights, as whippets are thin skined and very short hair, but whilst she is out working, she is grand and this strain are hardy. Only problem im having at the minute, is my one fighting, she is a trouble maker and has nearly killed my wifes dog!!. She wants to take over the whole place. I have also booked another pup with your man and will be getting it soon. Being it will only be 7 to 8 weeks, might fit in better, as i got my other whippet off him at 6 and a 1/2 month old. I would recomend them highly for ferreting and the odd spot of lamping. Best of luck John. Frank. Quote Link to post
Irish Lurcher 1,013
Thanks lads for the info. Frank, Why is your whippet fighting, was it to old when you got her, 6 months is still a pup, this is what I am afraid off, I was told that they can be little hitlers at times, do you think this was a one off or can this happen with all whippets. Frank i think the guy is from Enisscourty. John Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
. John She is very jealous, she attacks lighting fast and in like a terrier ! I have tryd most things, but she is kept seperate now. She is still at it and has had a few scraps with my older lurcher. I think, being she is set in her ways and hard to break from what she is doing. Whippets, meture earlier usually, then other running dogs. Now, saying all this, i think she is a one off for fighting. I have had whippets in the past and most were fine, you get the odd fighter in most breeds i reckon. The other pup im getting, will be very young and should fit in better. Frank. Quote Link to post

They are IKC reg, from some very good working/coursing lines. Their not cheap, a few 100 euros, but cheaper than what you would pay in the Uk. He works them, lamping mainly he said. When you going up? Quote Link to post
