Tiff 36
Kye keeps talking about us skipping church to go out, but anyone who knows us can tell you we're damned to hell anyway Well he and FR might be! Sunday we took out Kye's chocolate dog Agro, his son Cadno, and my Staghound bitch Slag. FR came round early and obviously had to wait around for a half hour for us to get our acts together. Work, dogs, Jays training, pet goats, ducks and chickens who refuse to lay reliably, not enough hours in the day to do everything, it seems we are always late. We didn't bother taking another digging terrier as Agro is built to work all day and as our first visit to this new permission netted FR's bitch 3 coon in one hole at our first dig there last week and the other holes we saw were decent sized, we knew any other dog would be tied out the most of the day. So Cadno got to come for a runaround, he's just a pup so it was good exposure for him. This spot is a 5 minute drive away and holds soybeans and feed corn on thousands of irrigated acres, surrounded by thousands more irrigated acres, woods and creeks. We do the pest control for his dad who is our neighbor, and he was so happy with us this past year he finally convinced his son to let us on his land. Calling with the coon, skunk, chuck and opossum counts daily during the season was important, he wanted to hear or see what we were taking off his land. So it worked, we have the sons permission and it will surely lead to more as his neighbors start hearing about us and the dogs too. FR has some good spots down his way as well, so eventually we will have more permission than we can handle and not enough dogs. Well hopefully anyway! A few minute stroll from the truck through the woods to a creek that runs through it and Slag marked a spot that looked like a chuck earth along the streambank. Agro ran over and pop was down, us all looking at eachother open mouthed. Saying Agro is a big dog is an understatement, but his chest is small for his size and his drive is undeniable. FR was stuck digging as Kye's hand is still not 100% and he had the 2 coon after some creative digging around the many big tree roots. I have stopped being surprised at how every hole is under the biggest tree around. He was waaaaayyyy back there Walking through the wood I almost walked into this guy, I've never seen anything like it? Quote Link to post
Tiff 36
A few more minutes walk, dog find another set and shoots in and there was immediate squalling from a coon. Bumping around, this spot had a half dozen bolt holes so Slag was everywhere checking and keeping an eye on things while we chatted and waited for the dog to bottle them up and stay for a spell. That Bellman and Flint is awesome (other than the beeping that was slowly driving Kye nuts) as this was a decent sized spot. Cadno decided to go for a swim, being young has it's benefits when you're hot I guess This was a rooty spot as well and took a bit to get to, Kye even picked up the spade but his bad hand has ached since then so I think he learned his lesson and will wait for it to heal properly before he tries again. Broke through, Agro had the first one dead. That is Agro's nose, not a pig snout ... notice the coons hand over Agros eye Slag drew the second and fell sideways down the hillside into the water so as Agro was handling the third we were all trying to avoid falling in the stream and laughing as we were trying to rescue phones, glasses and the camera from the water. Slag had her hands (should I say mouth?) full as she went from water that was chest high on her to over her head with an angry coon that knew what he was doing to stay alive and on his back in the water. But she quickly got the nack of keeping him by the throat even under water, I was well pleased with her. Cadno wants to help Cadno slipped his tie out and tried to get in on the fun so wading in to rescue him netted me some wet boots and pants. He did get nipped by the coon under water but he didn't stay phased long, I chucked the first dead coon to him on his tieout and he gave that one a good what-for. We'll have to see how he turns out, he is even bigger than his dad so he'll really have to want to get somewhere, or I guess he could go for bear? Good day out with good dogs and great company, thanks FR and of course thanks Kye, it was nice spending the morning out with my two favorite dudes can't wait till next time. Minus falling in the water of course Quote Link to post
