skunkhead 20
the WHITBY and SCARBORO Tunny (tuna club) THUNNUS THYNNUS yeah back then tuna fishing was big buisness in yorkshire.lorenzo mitchel henry was i think the first to make the discovery then his record was short lived when capatin ch frsby got a think 5 fish in one days fishing,it was for the rich and famous back then me dad used to tell me the stories of them being landed every other day when the tune were there, they were quite far out at sea but went up to a 1,000 lbs nearly they is somewhere on the internet a video in black and white of tuna being caught way back then,we had fotos once family fotos but when the house got turned over the hoorible ppl nicked em shame as me dad and me relatives were quite influencial people in scarboro and he had a few fota with me father his sister and a fe wof my italian ice cream makers in them shame the demise of the herring fishing industry finished them plus ww2 broke out but even after the war by the time the 50s was here theyd dissapeared but even up until the 1980s the two tackle shops in whitby still sold and hired big game fishing tackle yer could even hire tuna fishing tackle to have a doo for them, they are still there i knew a polish origin skipper called malinovski who told me once that they are still there i asked why they are never publised he said if yer get say just one by mistake and it weighs a mere 500lb and yer get a tenner a lb for it do yer maths michael ermmm yeah i get it now, everynow and then we here about ppl who are jigging over wrcks quite far out off whitby getting all the line stripped off in a flsah now we know that cod and ling will never do this.seen a feller hit a tuna once when i was in me late teens jigging wrck fishing off whitby we were about 30-50 miles off the coast and he hit a defos Tuna cleaned him out in the blink of a eye never seen the fish cant have been anything else, the smaller tuna run in august i think where they head i think for the coast of cadiz in southern spain to spawn maybe the bigger ones come later, smaller tuna seem to go for the irsh sea between england and ireland but big tuna are being caught for donegal westrn ireland i think 5 Quote Link to post
Huan72 687
They will still be out there all right The great white that was heading over this way wasn't coming for no reason, we have seals and tuna, depending on the sharks size, two of their favourite dinners Still a lot to learn about the migrations of marine apex predators 1 Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
About 1988 there were quite a few Skipjack tuna caught in the carmarthen bay area of the bristol channel. I had a small one in the nets but a few had bigger ones in their nets. Never heard of one being caught on the rod though. TC Edited to add the ones caught off Ireland were yellow fin tuna, where as the tunny was another name for the North Atlantic Blue fin Tuna Edited March 19, 2014 by tiercel 3 Quote Link to post
