timdog 0
hi i normally use .22 subsonic for rabbits but worry about any lead tracing being left in the carcass when the bullet his home and expands as i feed them to my goshawk could anyone rcommend a diffrent ammo option which may pass through and kill nice and cleanly with less chance of fragmenting or the bullet getting lodged in the carcass?? (i know more often than not it just passes through but still concerned ) Quote Link to post
Guest Macnas
Timdog I'd seriously doubt you'll find lead fragments in rabbits. Subsonic .22lr's have more than enough poke to go clean through any rabbit without breaking up or lodging in the flesh/bone/hide. The only time this might happen is if you are firing from an extremely long range, like 300 yards or more, or have altered the hollow point to impart a "dum-dum" effect where the bullet expands hugely on impact. If you are properly paraniod about it, you can but standard velocity ammo, like Lapua club. It's solid head, very accurate and if placed right kills as cleanly as any other round. Downside is it's a good bit more expensive. But again, seriously, I think you are worrying about nothing. Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
Head shoot only then cut off and disgard the head That seems a sensible option. Alternatively go for a higher velocity copper coated. That should go through quite cleanly (although it will tend to do more meat damage), and should leave no lead. Downside is ammo is more expensive and makes more noise. I think you may be a little too cautious though, people have been shi**ing out lead pellets from game birds, etc for well over 100 years, and whilst we all know lead is not good for you it has not been banned yet!
