mad al 146
As per the title........as I am a very keen walker I cant allways remember my way back to the car.....worth getting one?Cheers Wilf if you didn't drink and walk, you'd remember your way back alright  Never used one myself, so can't comment, I use the local forest here a fair bit and to be honest, by the time I fiddled around with something like this, I'd have run out of daylight . If I try out new tracks and think that I could have a problem, I just take a compass/map/whistle etc..........Al
Guest Scuba1
They are not much use if you are in tree cover, as they need line of ight to the satelites but other then that, they are dead accurate and if you but the position of your car in as a way point it will get you back to the drivers door even in the dark and all you have to do is stick the key in the door to get in. I have 3 of the things and love them for walks, drives and on the boat. ( never missed a good dinner so far ) ATB Michael

OldTrapCollector 377
Wilf, I use (or should I say carry) one every day of my life on the hills. They are a great backup when the cloud drops suddenly or fog rolls in and you have left the beaten track. To my mind you cannot beat a map and compass but the technology gives you a great peace of mind ~ but don't forget to carry that map or knowing exactly where you are on the planet to within 6 feet is not much use if you don't know where the Grid actually refers to!!! I have rescued two parties of walkers from the hills in the last 2 years, both had a functioning GPS but neither had a map or compass . . . it beggars belief . . . I do not experience many problems with tree canopy blocking out the satellite track either, the Magellan seems to handle it pretty well IMO OTC
Guest WILF
Do you need to use them with a map then OTC?........can you not just get it to find where you are when you get out of the car and then get it to direct you back when you want?......like the in car jobbys? Cheers Wilf, You can put the waypoints in for your walk (or start point) and 'Sat Nav' your way back to your car if you like but it's a bit like being a wire guided missile rather than taking a leisurely walk. If the batteries fail then you are pretty stuck too, aren't you?? OTC
Axholme Ferreter 0
I heard about someone using a hand held GPS to mark the position of mole traps. Anyone tried this?? All the best AF

OTC Cheers matey...........not looking to get to a paticular place, tend to just wander off in any given direction and then want to get back to motor........wire guided would be fine. The idea would be to take my position when I get out the car......switch off gadget..........when I wish to return........switch on gadget and get guided back to motor...... Should do that should it not?
