ryanod90 17
Hi as said above I have a permission that wants its grey squirrels gone or at least cut down as there is a few red squirrels around, just asking what is the best way to hunt these? I was told to feed the area with a hanging feeder and that would have then coming to one area? Is this right and how fare away would the hide be and how good of a hide ? And times to hunt them Thanks Ryan Quote Link to post
the big chief 3,099
I just follow them till they stop then head shoot them or I use lurchers to find them but if you have red it could be a problem if the hit the ground and running but your method will work if you build a hide at ya zero range say 30 yards should be fine Quote Link to post
Acuspell 329
Feeders work - but to be honest traps owrk far better, as traps work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Live traps, so if you trao a red it can be released and only greys despatched (air rifle at short range, head shot. You can trap them AND shoot wanderers witht he air rifle. A shotgun is more effective mind, because you can hit moving targets. To that end, feed stations work, because you can intercept the greys as they come to the feeder - so will reds, but in that case, if you get more red than grey interest MOVE the feeder. 25 yards is far enough, they are bold little chaps. DAWN for about 3 hours is the most productive time, then again at dusk and the preceeding 3 hours. From October right through the winter. Greys do not hibernate fully. They become less active, so choose your days. Very high wind and wet weather are not good days to go looking for grey squirrels. Those days are best spent making the feeders, or topping them up. You don't have to have them fastened to a tree, a hanging wire feeder works well too - and has the benefit of feeding the small birds too - standard peanuts are all you need. Hide - it doesn't need to be elaborate. A holly bush beside a tree is all I use. Keep still and quiet and you will be quite succesful. Edited September 7, 2013 by Acuspell Quote Link to post

paulk73 151
i just make a big feeder out of plywood with a feeding platform on the bottom. i fill it up with cheap corn flakes and a few nuts. it don't take long for them to find it. i just sit 30 yrds away in the shadow of a tree. it works really well.
