First Mooch About The New Permission

Recommended Posts

Well this morning me and my buddy had our first chance to have a wander about my new golf course perm. The 5am start was not appreciated, but the beautiful sunrise and cold crisp frosty morning made it all worthwhile!

sorry for the crappy phone pics!

The main aim of the morning was just to get the lie of the land really and see where the hotspots are. A quick walk up the front 9 and a bunny hide out soon became apparent, but a rush of blood to the head and a fluffed shot (I think I misjudged the distance) put pay to anything going in the game bag and we moved on. Not to worry, I'd rather miss than wound.

On the back 9 I knew there was a serious hotspot for hoppers as this was were the greenkeeper had pointed out on my visit. Sure enough a careful stalk up to the position revealed 2 good size bunnys getting their breakfast on the 15th tee. This time it was my buddies turn to fluff and both rabbits calmly hopped into the hedge never to be seen again. But we got the chairs out and settled in to see if they or any others came back. 20 mins later a wee kitten made an appearance which I thought was a good sign. We watched him for about half an hour hoping some adults would join him but none came. Running out of time we decided to take the kitten as at least it was something to show for the day, my buddy put a good shot in and down it went.

On collection I discovered it had a badly broken hind leg, it had seemed to be moving ok, but I don't know how! it was clearly an old injury and would surely have meant that it was fox bait probably sooner than later. I'm glad it had a quicker and more stress free death with a pellet in its brain.

Bit early in the year I thought to have these little 'uns out, but here it is.

Now we know the perm a little better next time should be more fruitful as we know where to sit now for optimum angles etc.

Interestingly, we didn't see a single squirrel which apparently are a real problem there! Lots of pigeons, but they were flying from roost before we were even close. We're looking forward to our next trip already!
