Guest DALE_2
this isnt a pure bred whippet , but my 3/4 bred whippet : LADY , i cant fault her lamping rabbits what so ever , i would also like to see pics of the pure bred working whippets , so many people seem to opt for a lurcher these days , as for the yapping my bitch does give the occasional one , with excitement , but soon calms down when she no's im not impressed . Guest FOXDOG
If all you want is a couple of bunnys then why not But thats all you will probably get a COUPLE of bunnys on the lamp you never hear of a whippet catching big bags do you? P.S I am in no way slating whippets they are good little ferreting dogs but I just cannot see a whippet catching big bags on the lamp Quote Link to post

Guest FOXDOG
No mate but mate always has a whippet knocking about and they just cant compete with a good lamping dog, I like the little dogs there game little things but they just cant compete with a lurcher Quote Link to post
Guest DALE_2
now i wont lie , but my bitch is usually a day dog / ferreting partner , so im not going to say she catches in her 100's lol , only recently last season started to be used as a lamping dog , on her own biggest ive had with her is 12 rabbits . as i usually take a bigger dog for lamping or lamp with a freind , on this night of 12 , i will admit 4 of them were mixy , if you want an all round lamping dog id opt for a decent working lurcher , all dpends on what you after , ... like a said im usually out with a mate so the dogs are getting a share of the work load , Dale Quote Link to post
lurcherman 28
The reason a whippets in mind is the land that i work most of the time is a large area around 70- acre but half the fields are devided into small feilds and boarderd by hedgerows and warrens the rest are larger my lurcher is very very good in the bigger fields but struggles a tiny bit more in the smaller fields thats why a whippet was in mind there small fast nimble dogs that can usualy turn on the eye of a nidle thats why im concidering the whippet the only fing is when lamping this permission i often take bags well up to the 30 and 40 and would a whippet withstand the hard graft? if trained and fit probably but theres a tiny bit of dought lurcherman Edited July 19, 2007 by lurcherman Quote Link to post
Guest DALE_2
in small feilds id safely say a whippet wouldnt have a problem , cant say much on the pure breds as have not owned a one , but as 3/4 bred goes , i think the 1/4 bedlington gives it that bit of fiesty and that bit ect so go that bit longer . JMO though . at only 18 '' to shoulder by little bitch turns / better of the mark than my bigger lurcher , so in smaller fields she excels herself more , she as learned to turn them out of the hedges also so that helps her . if i was working small feilds bounded by hedges id go whippet / whippet based . if working the bigger fields then obviously would be a decent grafting lurcher . then again its all personel prefrence . lurcherman 28
Thats the only reason i thought of the whippet like i said at the beginning im usualy a lurcher man hence the name lol bt from what ive heard they can be the bees nees when running rabbits in tight small fields. lurcherman Edited July 19, 2007 by lurcherman Quote Link to post

Guest mush
have heard a few storys of whippets 1 being they are prone to yap when up the arse end of their pray and 2 on an hard nights graft when the whethers bad they tend to shiver n wine n sometimes refuse altogether is this true? and has anyone got PICTURES of their whippets working the lamp?. Thanks lurcherman Yes all true all ones we've had, and the smooth coated whippets lurchers were the same, they also have trouble seeing rabbits a long way down the lamp . What do you call small fields? 2-3 acres ? a 24-26 inch 3/4 G 1/4 C or S est. will catch in very small fields. Edited July 20, 2007 by mush Quote Link to post
