Recommended Posts

this topic was on here a few years back , i just wondered if anyone uses them or have a design for them, for those that dont know , they are used to trap fox that have bin traced or run into a bad place ,stoned in so mr fox has to enter the trap and set off a trigger that drops a door behind them

Yes I asked a few years ago. The old ones were made of stone but most make them out of wood.

The idea is that once you have walled a fox in, you get your trap which is in effect a dark box open at one end, which goes into the den. (The trap door is also at that end obviously. The other end has a small slit to let light in and the trigger to drop the door.

The idea is that the fox enters the dark box, in its need to escape, scrats at the slit and sets the trap off.

The trap needs walling in properly to prevent the fox digging out. I don't have the plans but decided at the time not to bother making one.

There was a lad with a folding one he had made a few years back, next time I see him I will see if he still has it.

The main issue for me was that although it was wood, it was pretty heavy, so required driving almost to where the fox was walled in, and without a quad I was not realistically going to yomp one over the moor, when a terrier can walk in itself.

By all accounts though they are pretty useful especially if you can set one up on a small crack in a cliff, where you wouldn't enter a terrier.
