decoying foreshore

Recommended Posts

hello to all,

i was wondering about decoying (foreshore) so please excuse the following questions if they seem a bit silly

(1) what decoys do you use (mallard wigeon etc)

(2) how many do you put out each time

(3) how do you anchor them

(4) do you work to a specific pattern

(5) what cartridge do you use

thanks in advance for taking the time to answer all the above cheers

I use mainly hen birds most part of the season inland and on the foreshore .if I'm inland then I'll use up to 10 decoys all hen birds through most of the season then towards yge end I will put the odd Drake in with them .

I anker them down with fishing weights with a good strong cord , I use para shoot cord it's strong and does not rot in salt water. doing the same if I'm shooting pools on the marsh .

now if I'm shooting a tide flight or a dropping tide , I use a long line with 3 decoys on , I have 2 sets of these again both wigeon but one with a Drake bird at the back of the 3 because the Drake always follows the hen even in flight .how I've done my long line I connected the 3 decoys together but about 2ft apart then , I connect around 30 yards of again pars shoot cord to the lead decoy with a good hefty weight connected to the other end remember it's got to stand the tide pulling against it and long enough for the decoys to float if not it will just pull them under . what a lot of people forget about is the use of silhouetts they are just as effective as decoys .I use around 20+ of these when using a long line on a tide flight or shooting the green edge .

what I would say about cartridges is test different sorts through the summer .do some pattern testing see what cartridge gives you the best pattern through your gun and stick to it .Try heavy loads to for geese .

hope this helps
