Beginner at Lamping?

I also am a beginner at lamping and wanted to get started by using a torch style lamp that goes on top of my scope, you know, nothing too expencive or too big. Just something to do the job.

 

After many hours of searching the internet for the best deal on a gun lamp, finding one at my local RFD for a reasonable price (It was a Tracer GL2 and it was priced at a hard-to-beat £44) I decided that i didnt want to spent £44 on a lamp as my pockets arn't very deep. So i decided to check the good old fall-back, ebay, which turned up some good results and great bargains, but still out of my price range.

 

After purchasing a Hawke laser kit a few weeks back, i remembered it had an extra mount... This got me thinking, how can i cut corners and use this to my advantage? Then an idea poped into my head... Why not just buy a cheap powerful torch?!

hi bud,looks ok for that price,but i cant see the point of a lamp with out a pressure switch,[cant see one in photo]ive lamped for years,gun up'lamp on, lamp off,[pressure switch]get were ime coming from.just remember when lamping turn your mag down,and dont forget everything looks further away in the dark,happy hunting buddy,regards chaz.

I agree with Chaz a pressure switch / toggle switch / dimmer switch is an invaluable addon

 

Also if your trying to get close to rabbits you don't want to shine the light straight onto them - shine it off to one side or on the ground so the edge of the beam illuminates them, this way you are less likely to startle them and get within shooting range.

I agree with you both on the pressure switch but for £30 less that is something i can live with! some good points and tips there, i will bare them in mind. thanks guys

our local is like a chronic scene from the munsters lol... any good staff are removed immidiatly. returns consists of 'no you cant have your money back' end of.

 

a pesure switch is easy peazy to make.. speaker wire and some heat shrink tube, or cheeper some gaffer tape.(blur tac it to the stock, beats the velcro sticky messing up the wood.

 

i'd search further on ebay too...but!! dont get the multi clickie clickie you'll pull yu hair out with them things.(some you have to cycle through 7 options..3 gets on yu tits).

 

on off or bezel select or something like.

 

a fenix or a LED lenser have this luminum rating thing, 100 luminums as pritty much 100 meters.. 200 is 200 meters.

ebay has this other rating, 600 luminums is 50 yards, 400 luminimums is 100 yards etc etc..lol god where they measure lol. 300-400 will see a good 50 yarder..ish, or send the thing back.

 

missed a bit.. desent colour filters reduce the distance a fair bit, on the fenix i put one plastic filter on and got about 140 yards max, but it was still a lot of 'white' light in there spooking, i put a second acetate layer on and got a good orange that worked but 70- yards was pushing it.

 

and..IR filters dont work a spit on led cree stuff, i hear the luxion bulbs work but..wasnt stated if worked on the luxon cree type led's or not.(the others are bulbs).

i havent had a look yet, i will go this weekend. i was thinking about making one but they have a non standard battery screw cap.

 

as for the filters, i havent put any on yet so i cant comment, but i plan to put a red one on at some point. but i have heard the sugnificantly reduce the range.

 

i think what i will do is use this one as it is until i have a bit of disposable cash (which is quite hard to come by when you're 19 and drive whilst still at college) then i will buy a tracer GL2 or GL4 and use this one as a little spotting/handheld lamp.

 

its rated at 120 lumens and on a winter night (like the last couple of days) with alot of mist it ranges from 50 out to 100 yards so on a clearer night i think it would reach the stated 150.
