Marc_gwp 3
My year and half year old labrador has a slight issue which is puzzling me, out shooting shes retrieving woodcock, snipe, rabbit, partridge, pheasant duck the whole lot after seeing it coming down. Whilst beating she hunts and flushes all of the above and in training anything i throw she retrieves!. Now to the burning issue the blind retrieve she will run up to the bird but not retrieve it this can be very frustrating but im not losing patience as shes retrieving and shes young! Any ideas lads to correct this and bring her on? Marc Quote Link to post
stroller 341
let her watch another dog picking it up and then get her to do it, jealousy sometimes works. The big dog in my avatar is a b*****d for owning every shot bird on the shoot or the moor. i really have to keep an eye on him at the peg cos the crafty b*****d will mark a bird and then slope off. will she retrieve a dummy blind? if so start again with a feathered dummy and then cold game and then the real thing. its a tiny glitch she will undoubtedly click by herself one day. your absolutely right not to make a big thing of it though take your time and im sure you will work it out 1 Quote Link to post
Marc_gwp 3
Cheers stroller, had her out this morning "hid" three partridges and got her going with an easy thrown out retrieve, then sending her out she picked up the three blind retrieves no problem! So birds went in the game bag with a massive fuss made of her then in her kennel so fingers crossed! I have a ppointer who's the same lol every bird is hers!! Marc Quote Link to post
GazCross 0
Funny one. What has she experienced that made her drop the first one and so made her think all blinds are the same? Was it a rotten one? I agree by not making a fuss however by not trying to correct it could that impound the situation? Is it simply confidence? Although she is picking up so its likely a bad memory that has caused this. Perhaps on the next blind retrieve you could catch up with her and encourage her to 'mouth' it and see if she will hold it. Other than that its probably back to the training field and 'set up' some retrieves with MASSIVE praise and encouragement. All my opinion and I could well be wrong! ATB Gaz. Quote Link to post
Marc_gwp 3
Yeh what's been going through my mind gaz, the confidence she shows whilst retrieving from a shot or on a runner is second to none! Ive been back on the training field doing basic blind retrieves and touch wood its going good with plenty praise!! Marc Quote Link to post
