Yokel Matt 918
I've got a wildcat whisper on my rimmy mate - again not sure its quieter than a SAK. Strippable & reflex in style but at £100 more than a SAK not sure its worth it. Quote Link to post

Yokel Matt 918
I was a sucker for the marketing mate - can't sniff at your bargain though. Heard they're the nuts.. about time you got down the orchard with your NV mate to stretch its legs Quote Link to post
dadioles 68
I used to use SAK but now have DM80's on all of my rimfire's. The DM80 is not cheap but it is much better build quality than the SAK and with the overbarrel construction can shorten the overall length of the gun (and looks good - smile). In all honesty, for use on a .22 with subs, if money is tight stick to a SAK. It is all you need and having tried several moderators over the years I really do not think there is a huge difference between them in terms of sound moderation. The .17hmr is a different beast though. My Anschutz has a 14" barrel and the much higher energy of the round and the heat that it generates eats away at a SAK and after just a few months the baffles are pretty chewed up. SAK (I think) is only made for .22 and that hole is a little oversize for a .17 and therefore less efficient but the DM80 is available for both calibres and on the .17 does suppress the bang a bit better as well. So far after a couple of years use my DM80's look good internally. No deterioration in the .22 and just minor surface roughening on the .17 Obviously you cannot do anything about the supersonic crack generated by a .17hmr but you can hugely reduce the bang bit as evidenced by firing it with and without a moderator. Another thing you can do (dangerous? lots of disclaimers..... ) shoot the .17hmr at close range (1 foot or so) into soft soil or a big bag of peat or anything that would be safe and absorb the bullet with no chance of ricochet or blow back. At this range the supersonic shock wave does not have time to develop and that makes it easier to evaluate the effectiveness of a moderator. Without a moderator it is very loud! Quote Link to post
