Airforcehunter 1
Guys USAF type new To the UK Couple of ?'s 1. Can you train dogs with blanks? Specifically, can I fire blank loads out of my shotgun to train the dog with guns involved 2. Can you train with dead birds. I am a big proponent of using real birds whenever possible, but don't want to get nailed with animal cruelty for killing pigeons/ducks for dog training purposes Thanks in Advance boys Quote Link to post
ftm 3,357
blanks are fine mate but if its the dogs 1st outing with gun i would recommend taking afriend along to fire the gun while you keep dog a fair distance away ,you can then see what dogs reaction is to the noise as some dogs dont like the bang right up close on 1st time out . if your happy with dogs reaction move in to the noise on a gradual basis every other day , use dead birds by all accounts and when the dog is ok with noise from gun throw a dead bird out so that the dog associates the noise /gun with a bit of fun ie its retrieve! best of luck mate -billy Quote Link to post

Mooch. 177
No problems training with dead birds (aka cold game) just so long as it was killed in season. Fortunately duck season starts on saturday so you haven't got to wait long! Quote Link to post
