qaurtering

Recommended Posts

i cannot seem to get my dog to qaurter for the life of me, he keeps hunting in straight lines and when i have him going from side to side all he does is come back into my feet and back out again instead of hunting straight lines how can i fix that?

Depends how old he is and how ingrained the habit is and even what breed he is but i would start again walk with him side to side and instead of going for a walk in say a wood dont use the path get in the rough. A lot of dogs become path hunters just because they are allowed to run along the line of least resistance.

use treats thrown in the rough and direct the dog in side to side, graduate in blind dummy retrieves, then eventually cold game he will get the idea

agree with Stroller, Openshaw suggests you should always walk your dog in a zig zag pattern, as for sorting its pattern you could try encouraging it with your hands trying to direct it to left and right. once it runs past you turn and encourage it the other way. throw stuff to left and right as you go keep it in close and see how things progress, can be tricky but once a spaniel clicks [assuming its a spaniel] they seem pretty keen might take longer with another breed, hope all goes ok.
