How do

Well the garden is nearly workable now the rain has eased and stuff seems to have started to catch up,not fully by no stretch of the imagination but all hope is not lost anymore,

we had a bit of good fortune the other week when. Fella gave me and Martin these polly tunnel rings and supports, all that was missing was the long top bar and leg extensions but we managed to get some for a steal at £20, I made the clips and brackets at work while i had no breakdowns on late shift, we already had a spare sheet in storage for the present tunnel

All wire brushed and painted with galvafroid so the last a few years,

Hi

The corn does just as good to be fair I used to put it in blocks too but after trying it this way a year or two ago it takes up less space and still produces as much, could have put it in big blocks this year as the garden is normally just about full by now, the weather put stop to that, plenty of room for winter stuff,I find there's no hard fast rules about growing, just that it will either grow or it won't and there's sod all we can do about it lol

Thanks guys

Alot of hard work is done by Martin too it's just time and dedication,he's been doing it 30,it's def a full time job as well as work lol,my other 3 plots are behind the tunnel, 1 veg 2 Poultry

These pics were before planting the others plots,so they go from where the last pics took upto the big house on the background so if anyone wants to weed get in touch lol

There's a lot of people struggling to get any where to grow these days I guess the councils must sell of alot of their gardens?i know now at our council it's only one plot per house hold,Im lucky like Martin that only came in recently and as I had mine along time ago it's doesn't apply,i would be willing to let someone help out and learn the game if they ever asked, and grow a bit of veg etc,

It's not all good times as you know this year has tested my patients with the weather I must admit

But all will come good,An annoying thing I've noticed is there are people taking on gardens and giving up 3 weeks into it as the nettles are too high or it's not as easy as it looks weeding, then for 12months someone who's willing cant get anything, beleive if or not all mine was 3ft high with grass and bramble 10 years ago it's a long haul but the first boiling is the best

I know what you mean about peaople taking on plots then doing nothing with them. I used to have 2 allotments but had to giove them up because we moved I could not get the time to work them properly. They were all bramble, mares tail even knot weed when I took them over. 10 years later they were in a far better condition when I left them.

We moved to a new house and the back garden was a 45 degree slope full of back fill, so I decided to make some terraces just to grow a bit of veg.

The first terrace I built was out of stone.

That was followed by two wooden ones on the other side of the garden.

Right at the bottom of the garden I had space to put another bed in.

All the soil for the beds had to be barrowed in approx 15 ton of it. Hard work but worth it in the end as you say, the first of everything each year tastes like the best you have ever eaten.

Hi

I get no bother about the cocks I've got a few with the two outside and a few English game inside sheds so its a bit noisy lol people who live across the road tend to not hear them as there used to it they have been there a fair few years now,the only person to moan a bit was my mother as she lives opposit but I can live with that mate,I'm well happy with the gardens it's took half my life to get there but if this is what all the hard work gives me them sod it I'll just keep at it,when my mate finally packs up I don't know how I'll do it all by my self, but I'll keep going, trouble is I'm 35 come 90 years old it defiantly takes its toll on the body lol

Cheers

Outstanding garden rich. Just set one myself for the first time at this address, soil is good but needs heavy mucking to get the structure right, that will be done this autumn and left to overwinter before i turn it all in ready for next year. I shall use my own chicken manure (sparingly) and plenty of farm manure. What strain are your spuds rich ? rose some of mine the other day, tasty, hell yes, very big or many , not really lol, but the ground has had no feeding for years and years i know that, i just rotavated it and put some stuff in as my boy was doing somehting in school on gardenning and wanted to do it. I used to have a good garden many years ago where i used to live and enjoyed, but never bothered until this year here, its all lawned, so one corner of my lawn copped it and is now a garden, a bigger bit will cop it next year and see how it goes. Do you direct sew your beans etc or do you start them off in the polytunnels etc ?

Regards

Hi B

My lass has a horse ( bloody things lol) and I leave a trailer in the field so all the horse girls can fill it,then I just Rotavator it all in all the time,

The spuds are rocket, marris piper ,javelin, snd there is one more but can't remember it I'll ask Martin tomorrow, they are a good size but not great with all the rain we've had they boil down too fast, regards the seeds beans, all brassicas beet root, pea, leek, basically everything exept carrot and spuds are sown in the tunnels,it saves time and gives everything a good start,it's a all year round sowing really, I sell eggs and seedlings on a small stall by the side of the road to pay for feed etc and it covers our seed bill,

867aca0d.jpg

They go mad for fresh eggs and plants,I tell ya I owe alot to Hugh whittingstall for converting folk to go self sufficient,at 25p a plant its soon adding up,but to be fair even without the bit of dollar towards cost the enjoyment is payment it's self, hope you have a good year

Cheers
