Range finding can be done accurately as long as the scope is at the appropriate magnification

When you have your scope at 3x you have a very wide field of view, and just like a camera lense when it's at wide angle, everything is sharply in focus even with a wide apature. This effect is called Depth of field.

However the longer the camera lense or higher magnification in the terms of a scope the Depth of Field is reduced dramatically.

I'm sure you've seen the photographs of something like a close up of a footballer where the player and the ball is perfectly focused and the players behind and in front are out of focus? Thats taken with a long lense (high mag).

A genuine Rangefinder scope will let you focus on an object at 10x or 12 or what ever magnification its designed to used at.

For example; If the target is at 45 yards, you will focus the scope at 10x etc and then you look at the scale and read the off the scale.
