About to start using the above powder in reloads for .223, i am using a 50Gn Blitz bullet. Anyone else use this combo and can suggest a good starting load , and if possible minimum & maximum loads for both 50 & 55 Gn bullets.

Thanks in advance

Can't help you with 50 gr Blitzkings as the guy I reloaded for used 50 gr Noslers in his RWS .223

Copied from my notes:

50 GR Nosler Ogive = 1.912" (COL = 2.324)

New Case Datum 1.460 Fed Gold Primers

Starting Trim 1.753

N133 25.3 gr 10thou back at 1.902 (col 2.314) with 25.3g

Keep shoulder Datum around 1.463"

I would imagine that both heads are roughly the same - this combination produced a 5 shot group of .261 when I handed the rifle over, but, as always please work up loads. I am not a great fan of 'close to the lands' but it seemed to work with this barrel.

Thanks for that Rich. I read most posts regarding reloading queries on this forum but seldom give the benefit of my experience in a reply as I very rarely get any response from any OP as demonstrated with this thread who I am sure could have spelt the little word 'TA'.

Come on lads, sharing is caring etc etc, however for a starting point follow the data in the books, even those with quickload etc still double cross reference.

From my Speer manual edition 14:

They only list the following:

50gr Spitz SP - N133 start 22.0 (2899) max load 24.0 (3237)COAL 2.185

50gr TNT HP start and finish loads as above COAL 2.235

All of the following have the same start and finish max load:

55gr TNT HP COAL 2.235

55gr FMJBT COAL 2.215

55gr Spitz SP COAL 2.175

SP/CANN COAL 2.215

N133 start 21.5 (2775) finish 23.5 (3091)

Primers CCI 400

55gr TBBC SP ( trophy bonded bear claw bullet heads)

N133 start 21.0 (2809) finish 22.0 (2947)

COAL 2.220

Are you using magnum primers?? they do give a clean burn and good ignition, reduce your loads though as pressure wil be effected.

Viht 133 and 135 are very good powders, Im currently trying N130, which is a little bit of a fast powder but is doing quiet well so far, velocity is good and changing seating depth for accuracy at the moment, started with them seated about 27thou off the lands and getting 1.25" so a bit closer should tighten things up.

Apart from seating depth, to further improve on accuracy once you have got your seating depth about right, consider how much of the neck you need to resize - some barrels like just 1/2 , 2/3 rds or 3/4 of the neck resized. Bullet tension is so very important when you get so close to a good recipe

Dicehorn, thanks for that, I can honestly say its not something I have looked in to yet, Its all a bit new to me as well.

On a different note (sorry to Lewdan for the slight hijack, although it may be worth bearing in mind) A friend asked me to get some cheap privi ammo to play with his Bushmaster, all I could get at the time was a box of 69grHP Match, I filled a mag full in my pro hunter and did a rapid fire group - well lets just say my barrel liked them - alot! and at a cheap as chips cost I did wonder the worth in reloading!!! they clover-leafed at 3/4" at 96m and I was just aim and shoot as quick as possible, now Im either a very good snap shot (unlikely) or the gun just loved em!!! So at some point Ill be pulling some of them apart to see what powder they used and copying the dimensions.

Ill do some research in to neck tension, Im stretching the distance but generally hunt for fox, but admit I do like the odd long distance target.

Cheers

Mark, I think when you pull that factory load apart and examine the powder and weight, you will be none the wiser as 95% of ammunition makers use their own powder that is not commercially available. Your only hope would be to write to them and ask them what powder commercially available is nearest to their powder. If you do get a response just be careful as most commercial ammo runs pretty hot, so start about 10% below what powder they suggest.
