Treated as vermin on my estate. shot 7(well let friends) in the last 6 weeks. all bucks, 1 bronze and 6 golds BUT ive a head i shot nibbling a feed hopper thats a huge beast

Legaly yes they are,moraly? well that doe had a good chance of having a youngster either inside her or on the ground somewhere.

 

Muntjac breed all year round, so any mature doe which is shot has a good chance of having a youngster either inside her or on the ground somewhere. Populations will only be controlled by culling females.

You shot many deer mate.Not being funny but ive NEVER seen a doe of any species hang around to be shot after her follower has bit the dust .

Yes I have, and yes I have.

 

And if you are shooting to a cull plan, and have to get the numbers, it's the only way to do it. If you shoot mum first and baby runs away, you have a long follow up to make sure the youngster is humanely killed and doesn't starve to death. Of course you can risk shooting mum first and hope that the baby hangs around, but it's not really the done thing.

 

Now, if you shoot the calf/fawn/kid first then if mum heads for the hills, you have no welfare issue and no need for a lengthy, hard and expensive follow up. If she hesitates long enough for you to get the second shot off then it's all good.
