milegajo 595
If you guys want to gather Birch sap, you best hurry. I managed to buy some spiggots off eBay. Birch sap has numerous known medicinal properties and is a tonic appreciated and drunk by the Russians and japanese. Its blooming expensive mind! March is about the only time to get it. That squash bottle was full in under an hour, the orangina one in 10-20mins.
Mooch. 177
What do YOU do with it once you've collected it? I've tasted it straight from the tree and don't think much of it, yet our good 'ol friend Ray Mears will drink a cup full.
David K 172
It makes a decent wine, need to age it a bit but it's drinkable enough.
milegajo 595
Personally I drink it as is. I will be making syrup from it which I read is darn expensive to buy. Edited March 18, 2012 by milegajo
David K 172
It produces very little syrup by the time you extract all the water, which makes it so expensive to buy.
milegajo 595
From the watery taste i'm not surprised on the low syrup yield. Still, with free fuel in the wood burner and lots of birch trees, i'll give it a go.
The Duncan 802
You can get oil from birch too - good waterproofing agent.
