This is my personal opinion only mate. I wouldn,t have a modern steyr given.

The synthetic stocks, even the newly modified ones, have so much flex in them, you cannot reliably shoot them off sticks, or a bipod, as the point of impact changes. The quality has gone unbelievably downhill, as they are nailed down on price, in todays market, compared to the guns from a decade or two ago. Beware of old shot out ones too, whilst the quality is fabulous, they are nigh on impossible to re barrel, and if you can find a smith willing to do it, it is horrendously expensive.Scope choice is good, if you anticipate some longish shots, if its purely 100 yard forestry shooting, i would save weight, and go with a 6x42, it will give the same exit pupil [7mm] as the 8x56 [7mm] therefore transmit the same light.

Hi Baldie,

thanks for the promt reply, i have several thousand acres to shoot over around my home in Zumerset which is mainly small livestock farms. I have been useing a 22-250 on foxes. Most of the farmers like to see the roe about but they are now multiplying so fast they are becoming a pest and i have been asked to manage them hence the need for a 243, some of the land i can use the quad but most is on foot.

What is the choice in makes at around 1000 quid for rifle only.

would there be to much recoil in a lightweight carbine.

i would fit a reflex mod and a 8x56 scope as there is some longish range shots and i do alot of lamping foxes.

I have a Anscutz .17hmr carbine with a SAK mod and Zeiss 4-12x56 scope for the smaller pest and its the mutts nuts they dont know they have been shot!!

A grand would put you in the ball park of several production guns, like remington, howa [which are excellent value] cz, the tikka t3, in all its variants, you would get a sako, with another 100 quid. All of these are good rifles, especially the sako,s and tikka,s.Dont worry about the recoil, its not unpleasant in a .243, and if you moderate it, its not worth mentioning.

The law is changing regarding using .22 centrefires for deer, but they have backpeddled the b*****ds, and only cwd, and munties can be shot with a .22 centrefire, roe will still be off the list. We all have the feckin old farts at the british deer society to thank for that, the wankers.
