Springers and clip on bipod findings

Recommended Posts

Greetings Gunners!

In another topic, I happened to mention my practice of zeroing my underlever springers with the aid of a cheapo clip on bipod. This raised a few eyebrows and I was warned that due to recoil, bipods send the shot up and to the right.

This however, didn't seem to occur.

Today I had a play on chairgun pro (managed to get it running on ubuntu 11!) and re-zeroed the stable to 14 yards. I paid special attention to the Point of Impact from kneeling and prone bipod.

On the TX200 MkIII, tight groupings on the bull (1 inch kneeling, 1/2 inch bipod) no evident interference.

On the TX200 MkII and HW97k (both untuned and recoil heavy) slightly larger groupings.

What I noticed when shooting and confirmed upon inspection, was that if I got lazy and did not grip the rifle into the shoulder, the recoil sent the pellet low. On the bipod, the shots were in a direct line below the bull.

So, here is my hypothesis specific to clip on bipods. I believe that these bipods mimic the sliding action that manufacturers (notably the TX200 SR) have sometimes engineered. The bipod allows some movement backwards thus not interfering.

Conversely, I believe a Harris type bipod fixed to the stock, would indeed result in the 'up and to the right' phenomenon about which I was warned.

In summary, if you wish to use a bipod on your springer, and when reloading, can tolerate either removing it or are able to cock with it dangling, a clip on one is the way!

Ow zat!?
