secretagentmole 1,701
Last time I texted off my permission the owner asked me to get him a pheasant, so be oblige to the noblesse as it were. Down at the permission I have a quick scan round, pigeon numbers well down, must keep an eye open for that Harris that is flapping round. No sign of either. So back in the laurels and wait. Then the car klaxons started to approach. A couple went into the trees in the middle, so I decided to move out and see if I could get one there, As I got through the laurels I head one land behind me, mutter curse, so decided to get that one, I knew the tree it was sitting in. Little tip for new roost shooters, go down at mid day and look for the trees that have the most bird crap underneath! The bigger the crap, the bigger the bird! Obvious really but a useful tip. I knew this beggar was on a branch at shoulder height, I hoped he was looking elsewhere. Slowly I edged round the corner of the laurel, there it was as predicted, an easy shot from 20 metres. Nice sized bird. Squeezing this one off also disturbed about 8 nearby! Never mind, got one for the permission holder! As I was making my way back to my favoured shooting spot I saw it, the bird that is forever destined to be known as the Ping Pong Pheasant. Sat, proud, high and bleeding might in a tree 40 foot straight up! I prepared my aim, adjusted for inclination (Chairgun is so good), and fired. Now I have been practising knocking things out of the branches at high angles of aim, cones, old nests, so I knew how to aim. What I forgot was impact, momentum and blasted tree design. I caught it squarely in the head, Mole 15, Pheasant 0, Pheasant somewhat aggrieved by a sleeping pill made by Crosman delivered at speed has the temerity to die backwards, The swine deliberately fell backwards so it got stuck in the branches! Mole 15, Pheasant 15! Cannot find any bits of wood long enough to dislodge bird, tree is way too thick for Mole to move, branch way to thin to climb up! Idea, it looks finely balanced so another one, fired from underneath might just free it up. Careful aim, fire, head flies back bird slips off branch. Mole 30, Pheasant 15. I should have known this bird hated hunters, as it fell right in the middle of a flipping bramble bush. Mole 30 Pheasant 30. However I did get to retrieve it, Advantage Mole, it was bigger than the first so Mole wins game! The bottom bird is the Ping Pong Pheasant!
