Decent mooch about today.

Recommended Posts

Was going to go ferreting today, but i stayed up pretty late last night and had a few beers, so had a lie in this morn, and decided just to go for an old fashioned mooch this afternoon with the mutt.

Decided to stay local, so jumped the gate opposite the house, and headed off a long a stream, where there is some good thick bramble patches, and rough grass, and often there is a chance you will put up the odd rabbit or pheasant, and you never know, maybe even old charlie.

The start of the mooch was fairly quiet, with the odd pheasant putting in a noisy appearance, and one almost being caught, but ,managing to get through the fence and away, leaving the dog with a mouth full of tail feathers.

After a good while, the dog started to quicken his step, nose glued to the ground, usually a good sign something is about, he passed a large clump of bramble, then doubled back for a closer look, i saw him freeze, staring intently in, doing his classic tail wag / foot shuffle that usually means there is something there. He then froze, and as i got closer, chucked himself head first into the thickest part of the cover. At this point i expected to see the bunny come flying out the other side as usually happens, and was hoping for a bit of a chase, however instead, i could hear the tell tale screaming that indicates a catch. The rabbit must have been tucked up tight and was too slow to take to its toes!

Feeling fairly pleased with that i continued onwards, with the dog working away well, and then decided to do a bit of training, walking him back and fore across a few big fields, keeping him around my feet, before sending him off to hunt the hedge, then stopping him, calling him back, keeping him by me for a while, then repeating.

We then found a dead sheep, and another next to it caught up on the fence, so reported the dead un and freed the living.

After that, i decided to push him up a long ditch on the way home. He was working well up ahead, pushing through the cover and following various scents, and then up ahead i saw a rabbit break out of the cover and dart to the base of a dead tree with some tin sheeting and other shit piled around it. It disappeared from view and i guessed it had either run around and away across the field or there was a hidden warren about there, any way, the dog was soon on the scent line, following it like a beagle. As he got to the base of the tree, he started doing the tail wag again, meaning that there is a bunny close to hand, he then found the hole he was looking for, a kind of caved in bit at the base of the tree itself, half covered by metal, as i got there he was on his side trying to squeeze up into the hole and whining a bit, i pulled the metal aside a bit and he managed to get half his body into the hole, and then started kicking with his back legs and twisting about. All of a sudden, he shot out backwards with the rabbit in his mouth :toast:

At this point it was getting dark so we headed for home. Stopped off on the way back and gave the two bunnies to an old couple who live in the lanes, and appreciate the odd bit of fresh game

All in all a very pleasant walk and two rabbits in the bag, although niether caught in the conventional way

Took a couple of photos at the start and then kind of forgot in all the excitment!
