Please excuse the dumb ass questions, was prepared for a holiday of snipe, woodcock and pheasant shooting down in West Wales.

Speaking to a mate he has offerd me three flight ponds on the coast with20 acres of marshy wooded ground - perfect .

Christmas eve there was a flock of teal on the bottom lake, up they went and two shots later one teal in the bag. Obviously all this commotion scared everything away so I went home. It was duskish 4.30pm.

This morning (8.30) there was nothing on the lakes, ( a couple of teal that I managed to scare away). Then, lots of "honking" and two canada geese came in, they were out of range to start with then landed on the top lake, I crawled through the shite and still managed to spook them !

1) should I have waited for them to return ? (Teal and Canada's)

2) what is the best time of day- day break oir dusk or both

3) does this involve sitting around for hours ? - don't mind this, just need ot take a flask and a Christmas Cuban Cigar ! :boogy:

(Before anyone points any fingers - I have a steel prooofed gun, using No5 shot and I have a dog and BASC)

Many Thanks,

Belly :good:

Not nessacarily, but if it is quite marshy with a few ponds there will most likely be passing traffic, invest in half a dozen decoys get them set out and buy (and learn to use) a call and you should get the ducks dropping in. Better still if you have the time put some feed down to start getting them feeding from the flight pond, obviously this if more of a long term plan but worth it.

Both, but as above if it's busy stay through the day (get hidden!)

Yep patience is the name of he game and don't be too dissapointed if you don't even pull the trigger, that's wildfowling..

Good luck chap

Thanks for the advise, been down for two days and not had a shot ! Seen some beautiful wildlife and really enjoyed being in the West Wales countryside. Final night tonight so had a walk down the valley to the sea and then back up on the other side. Got to the top flight pond and the light was dropping, out of the corner of my eye I saw the dog put up what I first thought was a woodcock, really fast take off...all over the place so it must have been a snipe.. Instinctive shot and dropped the snipe at 25 yards (with 28g No.5 !).

Really chuffed, my first shot at a Snipe and nailed it. Won't be shooting another in a hurry, a beautiful looking bird. (I shall be eating him tomorrow)

Deffo be doing more wildfowling, love the solitude and the scenery.

Five trips ou over four dayst, 5 shots - First Teal (second shot) Missed pigeon (two shots) First Snipe (one shot)

Couldn't be better !!!! :toast:
