bigbarnett 33
I was out lamping last night and shot 6 rabbits and my mate shot 8 so we were looking foward to another good day. We were given some permission worth boasting about. Its fantastic to work and promises a big bag. Unfortunatley the mill was set on fire the night before so it was a no go today . But my mate said there was some new permission near work, because we work with his dad we were told we would be taken as long as we do a few jobs first. So i was kitted up and ready to go for 7. we loaded up the truck and set off to work with the new favourite ferret. We finished bout 10 so went up onto this permision to be told theres not a warren but theres a hole on a 1 ft mound  . so i just asked for some shooting permision. About 5 mins after we were rang saying we can go up on our old permission. fantastic :toast: . We get there unload and walk up the hill, we bolt 2 from the first warren both of which slipped the net , the second bolted one which the bed x whip caught instatntly . So we walk through the woods and watch the dogs run opne into a 4 hole warren which had a giant drainige ditch wich narrowed into a 5th hole. Ferret in and waited 5 mins nothing, another 5 so decide its time to dig. Boll*cks wheres the shovel. anyway i put my hand down a hole about 5 mins later only to have a 2 cm cut in the base of my middle finger. oh well its only a nip. we wait a nother minute and the rabbit bolts out of the drainige ditch and the dogs smash it. OH FECK THATS NOT A RABBIT, both the pups had hold of the ferret and eventualy killed it. so we decided today we had enough and walked back to the motor missing 1 shovel and one ferret and 1 rabbit, wait wheres the rabbit? so wed left the rabbit somewhere so possibly the worst day yet! :censored: :censored: Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
Don't take dogs out ferreting, unless broken to ferrets. Simple really. 4 Quote Link to post

johnny boy68 11,726
I see by your profile you're 16 and most 16 year olds are keen, sometimes too keen.Take this as a lesson learned and try to learn from it, if your dogs are not broken to ferrets then tether them up while the ferts are down, rather miss a bolting rabbit than lose a good worker. When laying your nets try not to be in a rush I know its hard when the adrenaline is flowing but just try to relax and be methodical. Accidents happen young fella try not to let it get you down to much. 2 Quote Link to post

At the end of the day if some ones calling you a pussy cos you are reluctant to trust your good working ferret with their dubiously ferret broken dogs. . . . then they are an idiot. A good ferret is worth its weight in gold and is more important that a couple of rabbits. Quote Link to post
