As far as I am aware, under the age of 14, he would only be able to carry the weapon, under supervision of FAC holder, and only when the holder is shooting for sport but would not be allowed to discharge the weapon. (I assume you are not shooting on a range etc)

Over this age he may fire the weapon when supervised by a FAC holder.

Hope this helps.

Anyone feel free to shoot me down in flames if this is incorrect.

Sorry vital, but that's incorrect.

The rules are exactly the same for rimfire as centrefire.

You cannot use a rifle "under supervision" at any age. The only exception to this is what's known as the "estate condition" which allows someone aged 18 or older to use a FAC weapon under supervision of a person who has that weapon on their FAC, on land they have the right to shoot over.

Someone under the age of 18 can ONLY fire an FAC weapon if it appears on their own FAC, or as a member of a cadet organisation or a Home Office approved club.

The answer to the next logical question is 14 (that's the minimum age for someone to hold an FAC)
